The Totems made a trade with the Bellingham Blazers for the playing rights to Kieran Maloney on Tuesday, ending the weeks long suspense if the team would be adding any players after their recent trades which saw 4 players exit and none coming back. “We are extremely happy to say that we have come to terms with Bellingham to bring in Maloney,” said Totems GM, Michael Murphy. “Trades like this are odd because of the league rules.
Murphy is referring to the financial suspension list, enforced by the USPHL. Players must fulfill their financial obligations in past seasons before they can move teams. “We would not have been able to pull of this trade without the cooperation of the Blazers and their management team. They must be commended for allowing players to continue their play.” Murphy added, Bellingham stepped up, the family stepped up and that’s why we are in this position today."
Maloney, 20, hails from Kamloops, BC, but now calls Edmonton home. Maloney last played in the USPHL in 22-23, for the Blazers, where he amassed 30 goals and added 25 assists in just 34 games, playing alongside Totems forward, Roman Wolynec.
Totems Head Coach said Maloney will join the team for practice immediately and should see action next weekend. “Satch” (Maloney) seems like a really respectful young man who is excited to get his career back on track. No question he’ll have to knock off some rust but we’re not going to handle him with kid gloves. He will see action and be integrated into our group immediately.” Butters added, “I am looking forward to see where he fits in."
The Totems will get a chance to showcase their new player as they face off against the Bellingham Blazers this Friday and Saturday.
